Theme #2: Water Does Wonders!

This theme encouraged kids and families to drink more water as it is a natural and free choice for kids to stay hydrated.

Water is essential for good health. It is also a simple, convenient, and low-cost option for quenching thirst. Let's encourage kids and families to make water their first choice to drink with meals and throughout the day.

Why do we want kids to choose water?

  • Children need lots of water to stay hydrated and healthy. Water makes up more than half of a child's weight. Water contains no sugar, calories, additives, or caffeine.
  • From age 4-18, around 20% of the calories children and teens consume come from beverages. Younger children take in almost 30% of their calories from beverages.
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages are a concern to children's health. They can replace more nutritious choices and contribute extra calories and sugar to children's diets.

How to make water the first choice

  • Keep pitchers of water on the kitchen counter or in the fridge for everyone to grab a drink from throughout the day.
  • Put water on the table at mealtimes.
  • Fill up re-usable bottles of water for the kids to take to school and sports activities.

Be your kids' best role model

If you make drinking water and choosing healthy options like fruit and vegetables a routine at home, your kids are more likely to make healthy choices throughout the day. That's especially true if children see that the adults they are with during the day, such as teachers and day care workers, make the same healthy choices.
