In 2022, the City implemented a hybrid voting model for the first time, combining traditional paper ballots (with tabulator counting equipment), with internet and telephone voting. This model replaced proxy voting and provided greater accessibility to voters.

This approach aligned with provincial trends. In 2022, 217 out of 417 Ontario municipalities, used internet and/or telephone voting, and 146 municipalities used these methods exclusively.

Based on the success of the City of Temiskaming Shores 2022 election, City Council approved internet and telephone voting as the exclusive voting methods for the 2026 municipal and school board election.

Eligible electors may vote using a computer, tablet, smartphone, or telephone. Voters may use their own devices, or attend an in-person voting station to access electronic voting equipment with staff support.

This change reflects the City’s commitment to improving accessibility, efficiency, and participation, while maintaining the highest standards of security and integrity in the voting process.

We look forward to making participation easier than ever.

Why this change?

Switching to internet and telephone voting allows us to:

  • Increase accessibility
  • Improve convenience
  • Encourage participation
  • Enhance election efficiency

The 2026 Municipal and School Board Election will be conducted using internet and telephone voting methods only. Paper ballots will not be used.

  1. Watch for your sealed and personalized Voter Information Letter (VIL) in the mail.
  2. Use the secure information in your VIL to access the voting system online or by telephone during the voting period.
  3. Cast your ballot using your computer, smartphone, tablet, or telephone.
  4. If you need help or do not receive your VIL, contact the Municipal Clerk’s Office.

Further updates and information regarding these voting methods will be available at a later date.
