To be eligible to vote, you must meet the Qualifications of Electors under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, s.17(2):
A Person is entitled to be and elector in a local municipal election if, on voting day, they meet all of the following conditions:
- Reside in the City of Temiskaming Shores, or be the owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such owner or tenant,
- Be a Canadian citizen,
- Be at least 18 years old on voting day,
- is not be prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended (MEA), or otherwise by law.
Note: A person may only vote once in the City of Temiskaming Shores election, regardless of how many properties they own / rent within the City.
Student Voters
Students may be eligible to vote in both their “home” municipality and in the municipality where they currently live while attending school. Note: “home” is considered the place where the student lives when they are not attending school (i.e. they plan on returning there).
Persons With No Permanent Lodging Place
If a person has no permanent lodging place, the following rules apply in determining their residence:
- The place to which the person most frequently returned to sleep or eat during the five weeks preceding the determination is his or her residence.
- If the person returns with equal frequency to one place to sleep and to another to eat, the place to which he or she returns to sleep is his or her residence.
- Multiple returns to the same place during a single day, whether to eat or to sleep, shall be considered one return.
- A person’s declaration regarding the places to which he or she returned to eat or sleep during a given time period is conclusive, in the absence of evidence to the contrary.
School Board Voters
To vote in a school board election for a trustee, you must be:
· a Canadian citizen
· aged 18 or older
· qualify to vote for that particular school board
If you are a resident elector in a municipality, you are eligible to vote for a school trustee that represents the municipality where you live.
There are 4 different kinds of school boards in Ontario:
· English-language public school board: By default, your property taxes support your municipality's English public school board, unless you are qualified to vote for a separate or French public board.
· Area board name: District School Board Ontario North East
· English-language separate school board: You must be Roman Catholic, and you or your spouse must be an English-language separate school board supporter.
· Area board name: Northeastern Catholic District School Board
· French-language public school board: You must be a French-language rights holder, and you or your spouse must be a French-language public school board supporter.
· Area board name: Conseil scolaire public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario
· French-language separate school board: You must be a Roman Catholic, a French-language rights holder, and you or your spouse must be a French-language separate school board supporter.
· Area board name: Conseil scolaire catholique des Grandes Rivières
