Take a look at some of the following titles or authors. Each of these can be found on Temiskaming Shores Public Library’s shelves and there may just be a gem here waiting to be read.
Zachary Ting and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao (J ZHA #1) – A teen by the name of Zachary Ying becomes the host of the spirit of the First Emperor of China on a vital mission to seal the leaking portal to the Chinese underworld. There are many references to pop culture from comics, games, anime as well as educating the reader on the history of Chinese culture.
Olympians vs Titan: An Interactive Mythological Adventure by Jessica S. Gunderson (J GUN) – An interactive choose your own adventure book on the war between the Greek gods and titans. Uses full-page illustrations with twenty different endings.
The Wyrm King by Holly Black (J DIT) – The third installment to “Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles” series where our protagonists, Nick and Laurie, must find a way to stop the mythological Hydra from destroying Florida.
Sunjata: Warrior King of Mali by Justine Fontes (J FON) – A graphic novel of the folklore figure from West Africa in a superhero style. A great introduction to this legend.
Maya and the Rising Dark by Rena Barron (J BAR) – Part one of a book series. A 12-yr girl and her friends must save her father who was captured by the Lord of Shadows. This story introduces the reader to West African gods and goddesses. A refreshing part of this book is that the group of friends are all chosen compared to a team helping the chosen one.
A Song for Ella Grey by David Almond (YA ALM) – A retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set in Northumberland. This title is often referenced as being different than most young adult titles. The tale is viewed from the eyes of a third party, Ella’s friend.
Interworld by Neil Gaiman (SF GAI) – A coming of age story with the protagonist looking to find themself. Joey is a “walker” and can travel between multiverses. A science fiction title for those who normally are not science fiction readers. This title is different than Gaiman’s usual titles. Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews (YA AND) – A reinterpretation of the Greek story of Apollo and Daphne. This title squeezes many Greek myths into one book. This protagonist is tasked with finding nine mysterious items stolen from Mount Olympus to save the gods and her brother.
