New Electric Ice Resurfacer - March 2024 |
Temiskaming Shores, ON – The City of Temiskaming Shores and its Recreation Department are excited to announce the purchase and delivery of a new Olympia Millenium-E Electric Ice Resurfacer. The resurfacer is the first electric ice resurfacer for the City and is expected to be used at the Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena. The ice resurfacer was received by City Staff on February 29, 2024, and, following training, was put into service on March 1, 2024. The current ice resurfacer at the Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena will be moved to the Dymond outdoor rink to be used seasonally at that facility. "I am thrilled to introduce the City’s new electric ice resurfacer, marking a significant step towards sustainability in our community. This investment not only enhances recreation for our residents but also underscores our commitment to a greener future for generations to come."- Jeff Laferriere, Mayor, City of Temiskaming Shores The City of Temiskaming Shores and GP North Woods LP (Georgia-Pacific) entered into an agreement for the advertisement on this new ice resurfacer. The agreement is for three years in length, plus an option for an additional three years and provides $7,000 in advertising revenue to the City each year. Georgia-Pacific understands strong communities make life better for everyone: our employees, neighbors and customers,” said Kelly Head, plant manager of Georgia-Pacific’s Englehart OSB manufacturing site. “We especially take pride in our support for the environment, students and their education which is essential to the sustainability of our communities. Georgia-Pacific is proud to be a good steward of the community.” The City’s arenas and outdoor rinks operate several ice resurfacers to perform ice upkeep and maintenance which are crucial for the public’s safe use. Downtime has an immediate and costly effect on programming which makes it imperative that the ice resurfacers are kept current and reliable. As part of regular lifecycle replacement, City of Temiskaming Shores Recreation Staff proposed the replacement of the Olympia ice resurfacer at the Don Shepherdson Memorial Arena as part of the 2022 capital budget and submitted their order for a total cost of $162,300. Due to the increasing costs of fossil fuels and decreased maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles, staff recommended that an electric resurfacer be purchased. The City expects to save at least $2,800 per year in fuel costs by switching to electric and will see a decrease of 5.2t of CO2 emitted per year, assisting in reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Pictured below are representatives from both the City of Temiskaming Shores and Georgia-Pacific with the newly wrapped Electric Ice Resurfacer. Shaver Park Refurbishment -January 2024 |
Shaver Park | 70-96 Queen Street, North Cobalt The City of Temiskaming Shores would like to thank the members of AC15 Hockey Tournament for a donation towards the refurbishment of the Shaver Park Outdoor Rink in the amount of $50,000.00. Shaver Park is classified as a community park within the City’s Recreation Master Plan and is the only community park within North Cobalt. Shaver Park boasts an outdoor rink, half-court basketball court, play structures and a warming shack. In 2023, a representative of the AC15 Hockey Tournament approached the City to discuss possible projects that they could donate funding to. Ultimately agreeing on pursuing a renovation to the Shaver Park Outdoor Rink. The proposed project would see asphalt placed on the outdoor rink surface, fencing behind each goal replaced, and a bicycle training course painted on the new asphalt surface. The project will create a new summer space that residents can utilize for activities such as ball hockey, roller hockey, cycling, rollerblading etc. Having more spaces for unstructured play is important for the recreational needs of residents. |
